Project Title: Fossil Size Database: Analyzing the Animal Size Response to Past and Ongoing Climate Variability
Project Summary: Researchers in the Deutsch lab examine the dynamics of oceanic oxygenation and its role in the changes in body size of marine organisms using multiple approaches.
Student Roles and Responsibilities: The student will primarily focus on a database approach to investigate the relationship between environmental changes and changes in animal size in fossil records. The student's tasks will include: (1) compiling body size data from published fossil records, (2) learning about computational and paleontological approaches used in the lab, (3) understanding and extracting information from scientific literature, and (4) gaining entry-level hands-on experience in studying fossils under the guidance of a postdoc mentor. The main responsibilities include measuring the body sizes of specimens using existing images or descriptions from databases, archives, or monographs, as well as curating the compiled data.
