Laboratory Learning Program 2025 - NMR-based Metabolomics with Special Software Tools (CHE-04)

Research Opportunity Number: CHE-04

Project Title: NMR-based Metabolomics with Special Software Tools.

Project Summary: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for analysis of metabolic mixtures. We have a great collection of horse serum NMR spectra. The quantitative analysis can identify diastase conditions (such as inflammation) against healthy cohorts. The process and concept of such analysis is fully analogous to human studies, which is a revolutionary change for medical diagnosis.

We have special software tools available for the participants to process and analyze spectra (MNova), conduct multivariate statistical analysis (SIMCA), extract selected important peaks for quantitation (CRAFT), and full quantitative analysis (UPS-ID). The results can be of significant scientific value, worthy for publication.

The students will learn about metabolic analysis in general, read and discuss relevant, up-to-date literature, will learn the basics on NMR spectroscopy and some of its applications, also introduced to the daily activities of our superb NMR facility.

Student Roles and Responsibilities: The students will analyze NMR spectra already stored on disk using special software (MNova, CRAFT, SIMCA, possibly USP-ID), read and discuss relevant literature, participate group meetings, produce publication-ready summary of the results.

Additional Considerations: Student should have a good understanding of common software (Excel, for example) and internet tools.
